Use the car, but park once
Drive to Mosque Foundation, continue downtown, and leave the car in one garage while exploring the Riverwalk. Skip the duplicate Navy Pier stop, then drive north for Devon dinner.

Lollapalooza weekend
Your hotel is outside the CTA system. Use a day-by-day mix of driving, Metra, CTA, and short rideshares instead of returning to Downers Grove between activities.
Drive to Mosque Foundation, continue downtown, and leave the car in one garage while exploring the Riverwalk. Skip the duplicate Navy Pier stop, then drive north for Devon dinner.
After breakfast, drive to Main/Downers Grove for the 11:28 AM BNSF train, scheduled to reach Union Station at 12:20 PM. Use CTA or a short rideshare for the zoo, dinner, and Navy Pier. After the fireworks, target the 11:33 PM return train; it is scheduled to reach Main/Downers Grove at 12:23 AM.
Drive directly to Montrose, then continue to Slim’s, Warren Park, and Devon Avenue. Do not return to the hotel until after dinner.
Before each outing: recheck the BNSF timetable, service alerts, stroller accessibility, and live travel time. Lollapalooza street closures can reroute buses near Grant Park. On CTA, children under 7 ride free with a fare-paying adult; children ages 7–11 use the reduced fare.
Three days, one easy rhythm
Each day follows a simple route and includes a proper reset for the youngest travelers.
Fri · Jul 31
Jumu’ah at Mosque Foundation, downtown views, and an optional Devon Avenue dinner finale.
Leave the Downers Grove hotel by about 11:00 AM and check live traffic. The first Jumu’ah is expected at 12:30 PM, but reconfirm the time with Mosque Foundation during the week of the trip.
Eat a packed lunch before leaving Bridgeview, or drive toward a listed restaurant. Allow roughly 45–75 minutes for the transfer and festival-weekend traffic.
Walk only the scenic central section. Watch the boats, photograph the bridges, and stop whenever little legs need a break.
Eat at Ghareeb Nawaz, then take a short 30–45 minute walk past the Pakistani and wider South Asian groceries, bakeries, clothing shops, and sweet stores along Devon Avenue.

Sat · Aug 1
Finish breakfast and leave the hotel around 10:30 AM. Aim for the 11:28 AM train from Main/Downers Grove to Union Station, then take CTA or a short rideshare to reach the zoo around 1:00 PM without rushing the children.
Bring lunch from home, find a shady spot, and give the children unstructured play time without leaving Lincoln Park.
Stay near the zoo for a slow stroller walk and quiet time by South Pond. Let the youngest children nap in their strollers while adults rotate breaks.
Share a family platter at The Port of Peri Peri, or use another confirmed option before heading east to Navy Pier.
Walk the pier, skip paid rides, and settle in early for the scheduled 10:00 PM show. Wait 15–20 minutes after the finale, then allow generous time to reach Union Station for the 11:33 PM BNSF train. Missing it means a much later return.
Restaurant options: Lou Malnati’s Lincoln Park — 958 W Wrightwood Ave; The Port of Peri Peri — 850 W Superior St
Sun · Aug 2
Leave the hotel around 10:00 AM and check live traffic. Swimming is allowed only from 11:00 AM–7:00 PM when lifeguards are on duty; check the beach flag, water quality, weather, heat, and air-quality alerts before leaving. If the beach closes, use a pre-booked free visit to Lincoln Park Conservatory as the indoor backup.
Stop at Slim’s for halal Chicago-style favorites, or use the last packed lunch supplies. Keep dry clothes and water easy to reach.
Stay on the North Side for playground time, a stroller nap, or a quiet break at this large park just west of Devon Avenue.
Share family-style biryani, kebabs, naan, and desserts at Sabri Nihari or a casual zabiha-halal option nearby.
Restaurant options: Slim’s on Montrose — 2020 W Montrose Ave; Sabri Nihari — 2500 W Devon Ave
Spend on memories, not tickets
Riverwalk, Lincoln Park Zoo, Navy Pier promenade and fireworks, Chicago beaches, and Devon Avenue wandering all fit the plan without attraction tickets.
Best-value splurge: make one family-style halal dinner the treat instead of buying nine attraction tickets. Zoo admission is free, but its official parking typically costs $35–45, which is another reason to use Metra on Saturday.
